For our next event in late May, we are delighted to collaborate once again with archaeologist Konstantina Varela, whose contribution was instrumental to the success of our previous gathering. A specialist in Byzantine archaeology, she has designed a unique cultural journey through some of the most remarkable monuments of Argolis.
The visit will begin at the Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos in Neo Iraio, one of the most important Byzantine monuments in the region and an outstanding example of Middle Byzantine architecture. Dating to the early 12th century, the church is distinguished by its dome, refined cloisonné masonry, rich ceramic decoration, and striking stone-carved motifs featuring crosses and pseudo-Kufic ornamentation. Ms. Varela will lead an on-site guided tour and talk, offering insights into the monument’s history, architectural features, and cultural significance.
The group will then continue to the Castle of Argos, where participants will enjoy a guided walk accompanied by a presentation on Byzantine fortifications and the strategic importance of the castle through the centuries.
The event will conclude at ElaGaia with a lecture and closing gathering in a warm and welcoming setting.
Further details and the full programme will be announced soon.
