For our upcoming event, weare delighted to invite participants on a unique archaeological journey throughthe Mycenaean landscape of Argolis, focusing on the remarkable hydraulic andfunerary monuments associated with ancient Tiryns. The event includes successive visits to key monuments located throughout the Tirynthian landscape.
Τhewalk will explore aspects of Mycenaean engineering, landscape management, andburial architecture that reveal the sophistication of one of the mostinfluential civilizations of the Late Bronze Age. We will begin at theMycenaean dam of Tiryns, an impressive technical work connected with themanagement and diversion of water in the Argive plain. Participants will havethe opportunity to discover how the Mycenaeans intervened in the naturallandscape through large-scale engineering projects, demonstrating advancedplanning and organizational capabilities uncommon for their era.
Thegroup will then continue to the two tholos tombs of ancient Tiryns, monumentalfunerary structures associated with elite Mycenaean families and rulers.Through an on-site presentation and guided discussion, the architecturalcharacteristics, construction techniques, and symbolic significance of theseextraordinary tombs will be examined within the broader context of Mycenaeansociety and funerary practices.
The event will conclude with a closing presentationdiscussion in the hospitable setting of a traditional coffee-tavern (“Drosia”) besidethe main square of the modern village of New Tiryns, offering participants theopportunity to reflect on the enduring legacy of Mycenaean civilization withinthe Argolic landscape.
