This talk explores the philosophical and legal foundations of the right to free speech. It examines the importance of truth and the free exchange of ideas from the perspectives of historical philosophers and modern intellectuals alike in its first half. In the second half, the lecture will explore current issues that pose challenges to our understanding of truth and the defense of free speech. These current events include the rise of artificial intelligence and its influence on politics, restrictions on the media and free press in the United States, repression of student protests and threats to universities, and the Trump administration’s retaliation against Senator Mark Kelly following his call to resist illegal military orders. The lecturer also includes a finale segment highlighting the advocacy of Vaclav Havel and Joan Baez as a reminder to the audience to keep up the good fight.
Wendell Goddard has lectured on current issues in public policy for over a decade. Wendell attended Berkeley Law School at the University of California and Yale University. He was a law clerk for United States District Judge Whitman Knapp in New York and worked as a litigator in the San Francisco Bay Area for 45 years. Wendell believes that civic engagement is essential to the preservation of democracy.
