Argos: The Base of the Icarus School During World War II (1940–1941)

21 September 2025

Location: 2nd Elementary School of Argos & Argos Airfield & ElaGaia ~ Time: 16:30-20:30

The event opened with a deeply insightful exploration of Argos’s strategic importance and everyday life during the critical years of 1940–1941, offering participants a rich historical perspective on a defining period in modern Greek history. Through a carefully curated guided tour and an illuminating lecture, Professor Konstantinos Lagos (PhD in History, Professor of Air Force History at the Hellenic Air Force Academy) together with Brigadier General Pantelis Vatakis (Hellenic Air Force, ret.) brought to life the realities of wartime Argos. Drawing on rare photographs, archival material, and eyewitness testimonies, they highlighted the role of the Hellenic Air Force Academy’s Icarus School during the Greco-Italian War. The presentation revealed how national events were deeply intertwined with local experience, showing how war shaped daily life, collective identity, and the enduring processes through which memory is preserved in both landscape and historical archives.

Following this historical journey, the programme continued at ElaGaia, where the tone shifted from documentation to lived, emotional reflection. In this evocative natural setting and under the coordination of Eleni Triantafyllou, five actors—Nadia Daniil, Angeliki Bouloukou, Iphigenia Oikonomou, Aristogeiton Pananos, and Giannis Rousos—presented powerful readings of monologues and letters drawn from victims of war. Through restrained yet deeply moving performances, voices from different historical moments were brought into dialogue, tracing the human cost of conflict across time. The readings extended beyond historical narration, creating emotional and ethical connections to contemporary humanitarian tragedies, including the experiences of relatives of Greek soldiers during the German occupation and victims of ongoing conflicts such as those in Gaza.

As the evening unfolded, ElaGaia became a space of collective remembrance and shared humanity. The boundary between past and present softened, as the voices of yesterday resonated with the wounds of today. What began as a historical exploration evolved into a ritual of reflection, empathy, and witness. The programme concluded in silence, emotion, and contemplation—leaving participants with a profound sense that memory is not only preserved in archives and landscapes, but also sustained through human voice, presence, and the act of remembering together.
